Electronic systems are the only way to reliably assess the amount of your pasture because they measure the dry matter in grass, not the height, which is a particularly important feature. PastureGauge is the worlds most advanced electronic system, with several options to suit various budgets and requirements. It measures the amount of pasture in a paddock easily and accurately.

The diagram shows the electronic field which surrounds the gauge. The field extends out to about 100mm radius, and once influenced by pasture, changes its characteristics. This change is detected by an electronic counter in its computer, and stored as part of the paddock's total measurement. A major advantage of the electronic system is that it uses the density of the grass, rather than grass height to achieve the measured results. This means that although the pasture may look the same height as another species, the dry matter may differ significantly, and this difference is sensed by the measuring gauge. Other systems, without being calibrated, can't resolve this difference.
